00:00:00.221 --> 00:00:01.062
Hey there, sunshine.

00:00:01.062 --> 00:00:20.782
If you are all about eating whole plant foods in the way that's simple, enjoyable and delicious, so that you can finally feel your best and live your God-given dreams, you have found your family, and today we are talking about something that's very personal to us, because we're about to hit the road again and go on vacation, and what comes to mind when you think about a road trip?

00:00:20.782 --> 00:00:22.164
Well, snacks.

00:00:22.285 --> 00:00:24.028
You got to have road trip snacks.

00:00:24.929 --> 00:00:26.734
It's always about the snacks.

00:00:26.734 --> 00:00:34.087
Now you may think, if you've just transitioned to whole food, plant-based, or you're new to this, what in the world do you eat and where do you find it?

00:00:34.087 --> 00:00:40.972
So we're going to be sharing five of our favorite snacks today and some of the places that we find them that you might not expect.

00:00:40.972 --> 00:00:44.627
Hey sister, welcome to the Power on Plants podcast.

00:00:44.627 --> 00:00:49.947
Are you tired of staring into the fridge wondering what to eat so you can just feel better?

00:00:49.947 --> 00:00:55.348
Do you want to avoid spending hours in the kitchen making complicated meals in the name of health?

00:00:55.348 --> 00:01:01.628
Would you love to leave fatigue behind and finally have the energy to do all the things you want to do?

00:01:01.628 --> 00:01:09.253
Hi, we're Jared and Anita Roussel, christ followers, healthcare professionals, parents of four and big fans of great tasting food.

00:01:09.253 --> 00:01:21.486
We, too, tried exercising more, eating natural and clean foods, but we still found ourselves struggling with what we thought were changes that come with age or bad genes, and we weren't finding answers the traditional route.

00:01:21.486 --> 00:01:28.727
So we dug into the research and created our secret nutritional weapon sustainable plant-based living.

00:01:28.727 --> 00:01:32.540
The truth is, you can eat more whole plant foods and it's not hard.

00:01:32.540 --> 00:01:37.691
You just need the way that's realistic and delicious so you never feel deprived.

00:01:37.691 --> 00:01:45.941
If you're ready to enjoy your meals, no longer be held back by your health struggles and actively live your life, then you're in the right place.

00:01:45.941 --> 00:01:51.192
So grab your favorite plant-based cup of happy pop in those earbuds and let's get started.

00:01:51.192 --> 00:01:53.924
Welcome back to Power on Plants.

00:01:53.924 --> 00:01:58.424
We are thrilled to have you with us and have you as a part of the Power on Plants family.

00:01:58.844 --> 00:02:07.123
Today, as we're packing our things, getting ready to head out on the road, we want to share with you how simple it can be to find healthy snacks.

00:02:07.123 --> 00:02:19.283
You always think I've got to go to this grocery store and that grocery store, but sometimes it's just a little switch, just a little change in the way that you think that can make all the difference.

00:02:19.283 --> 00:02:30.981
And this happened for me one time when I was in a home goods and I was walking the aisles looking at the linens, looking at the kitchen stuff, and, lo and behold, there are three or four aisles of snacks what in the world?

00:02:30.981 --> 00:02:37.866
And so you look at them and, of course, typically, just like all the regular snacks, you see things that say healthy and natural.

00:02:37.866 --> 00:02:42.443
But if you've been around us any amount of time, what does Anita always say?

00:02:42.443 --> 00:02:44.808
Turn that puppy over.

00:02:44.808 --> 00:02:48.906
If you sang that with me right then, then you know you're part of our family.

00:02:49.026 --> 00:02:50.349
Absolutely and if you didn't.

00:02:50.790 --> 00:02:56.050
This is one of our key phrases that we use here at Power Implants Turn that puppy over.

00:02:56.050 --> 00:02:56.692
What does that mean?

00:02:56.692 --> 00:03:02.599
That means you flip the bag over and you look at the back and you're going to see what's actually in there.

00:03:02.599 --> 00:03:06.471
I'm not talking about carbs, grams, protein, all this stuff, the macros.

00:03:06.471 --> 00:03:09.389
I'm talking about the actual ingredients label.

00:03:09.389 --> 00:03:17.671
Generally, it's the simplest things that make the biggest difference, and that is especially true when it comes to the ingredients in your foods.

00:03:18.060 --> 00:03:20.449
Because the front of the package they can say whatever they want.

00:03:20.449 --> 00:03:25.372
An example that goes back to a long, long time ago was olive oil mayo.

00:03:25.372 --> 00:03:35.044
But when you flip that puppy over, olive oil's last on the list and it's got tons of other things in it so they can say whatever they want to on the front, because that's the billboard they're trying to get you to buy it.

00:03:35.044 --> 00:03:39.241
But you got to look at that ingredient list because that will tell you what you need to know.

00:03:39.461 --> 00:03:50.252
Yes, and the first point I want to make here is always always look around in the stores you're in and keep an eye out for new snacks to try and check them out.

00:03:50.252 --> 00:03:57.251
But I want to break the mindset that the snacks have to be found in the grocery store, because you might find them wherever you go.

00:03:57.251 --> 00:04:13.760
We find them at places like here's your Insider Scoop if you live in areas where you have these stores HomeGoods Insider Scoop if you live in areas where you have these stores HomeGoods, tj, maxx, marshalls, even Ross.

00:04:13.760 --> 00:04:15.564
At times we found snacks World Market is another great place to look for snacks.

00:04:15.564 --> 00:04:19.432
So if you have any of those stores, always check the snacks area and read the back of the package.

00:04:19.432 --> 00:04:27.120
And today, on top of that, we're going to share with you five of our favorite recent finds from these stores.

00:04:27.521 --> 00:04:30.447
The first one is apple chips.

00:04:30.447 --> 00:04:41.447
Now, I know that may not sound so exciting, but I'll tell you when you can find an apple chip that doesn't have oil, sugar, any of the nasty ingredients that you can't even pronounce on the back, you're golden.

00:04:41.447 --> 00:04:50.319
I mean, I remember this time when some of our friends were coming to visit us and they said oh, I help the, you know so-and-so, got this and that and all I had was apple chips.

00:04:50.319 --> 00:04:55.730
And you look at the back of the apple chips and it's oil, sugar, apple chips.

00:04:55.730 --> 00:04:58.180
It's just the first ingredients.

00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:01.345
I think we're oil and sugar and then some other things we couldn't pronounce.

00:05:01.766 --> 00:05:07.274
So a good brand that we have found is called Simple Slices.

00:05:07.274 --> 00:05:13.612
It's a red package and we picked them up the first time and they're almost crinkle cut like crinkle cut fries.

00:05:13.612 --> 00:05:17.947
They are the crunchiest, most delicious dried apple chips you can imagine.

00:05:17.947 --> 00:05:28.709
But the winner is if you can find the ones that say cinnamon, red apples, cinnamon, red apples or apple chips that have cinnamon on them.

00:05:28.709 --> 00:05:30.507
So I'm going to turn that puppy over.

00:05:30.507 --> 00:05:31.983
I'm going to read the ingredients label.

00:05:31.983 --> 00:05:35.153
Here goes Apples, red apples and cinnamon.

00:05:35.153 --> 00:05:40.824
If I had a clap emoji I could show you right now, or a clap sound bite.

00:05:40.824 --> 00:05:42.012
We would be playing that right now.

00:05:42.012 --> 00:05:44.396
But this is a winner.

00:05:44.817 --> 00:05:47.824
Imagine that Just apples and cinnamon.

00:05:48.350 --> 00:05:49.194
Shocking, right?

00:05:49.194 --> 00:05:59.148
This is what you want your ingredients list to look like, when you want to feel better and your joints to stop aching and the inflammation to stop taking control of your life, and you want your energy back.

00:05:59.148 --> 00:06:00.697
You want to avoid theing and the inflammation to stop taking control of your life and you want your energy back.

00:06:00.697 --> 00:06:04.764
You want to avoid the oils and the sugar and get the whole plant food.

00:06:04.764 --> 00:06:07.137
So, simple slices, it says.

00:06:07.137 --> 00:06:08.785
At the top, it says gourmet nut.

00:06:08.785 --> 00:06:15.771
Now I don't know if the gourmet nut or simple slices is the actual brand name, but keep an eye out for those because they are amazing.

00:06:15.771 --> 00:06:19.300
And maybe you think well, Anita, I don't have any of those stores near me.

00:06:19.300 --> 00:06:24.201
Well, how about you get online and Google this and see where you can find it shipped direct to your door?

00:06:24.201 --> 00:06:28.074
There's another life changing tip for you Get it shipped to your door.

00:06:28.074 --> 00:06:33.291
Take these same five things I'm telling you and I bet you can look those up and find them and try them out.

00:06:33.593 --> 00:06:37.283
I do find some of the best grocery trips are the ones we never have to make.

00:06:37.745 --> 00:06:40.954
Yes, right, come straight to your door, absolutely.

00:06:40.954 --> 00:06:50.281
And then the next one is any other kind of dried fruit, but we specifically love mangoes or apricots, and the ones by this brand, sunny Fruit.

00:06:50.281 --> 00:06:51.370
We really like these.

00:06:51.370 --> 00:06:53.735
They're organic and then let's turn it over.

00:06:53.735 --> 00:07:03.634
It's soft and succulent dried Turkish apricots and you turn it over over, it's just organic dried apricots, and these do have a little bit of water at.

00:07:03.634 --> 00:07:06.492
It's kind of funny that they're dried and then there's a little bit of water.

00:07:06.492 --> 00:07:09.800
But I think they may do that just so they're not overly dry.

00:07:09.800 --> 00:07:14.286
Because you buy dried fruit and I don't like the dried apricots that are so hard and dry.

00:07:14.286 --> 00:07:15.430
They just don't taste good.

00:07:15.430 --> 00:07:19.026
So these are a little I hate to, to say it moist.

00:07:19.648 --> 00:07:20.290
I hate to say that.

00:07:20.290 --> 00:07:21.997
Hopefully that word doesn't bother you.

00:07:21.997 --> 00:07:25.170
They're delicately reconstituted, delicately.

00:07:25.170 --> 00:07:25.750
How about that?

00:07:26.291 --> 00:07:27.374
They're wonderful.

00:07:27.374 --> 00:07:29.098
We really like these.

00:07:29.098 --> 00:07:35.915
The third thing that you want to look for are and actually the fourth thing these are some different types of nuts.

00:07:35.915 --> 00:07:41.904
So if you can find raw nuts, that's great, but when we travel we like to buy the ones with a little bit of sea salt.

00:07:41.904 --> 00:07:46.562
And there is one called Valued Naturals, and these are cashews.

00:07:46.562 --> 00:07:48.035
They're not organic, though.

00:07:48.035 --> 00:07:48.718
That's the only thing.

00:07:48.718 --> 00:07:49.889
I wish they were organic.

00:07:49.889 --> 00:07:54.983
But you might find an organic roasted and salted cashew with just a little salt.

00:07:54.983 --> 00:07:56.797
If you're eating salt-free, that's great.

00:08:05.689 --> 00:08:06.494
Look for the roasted that aren't salted.

00:08:06.494 --> 00:08:08.682
They also have those sometimes, but it's just cashews and sea salt, nothing else, and I don't eat a lot of them.

00:08:08.682 --> 00:08:12.855
We don't portion these out in big portions, not because we're afraid of gaining weight, but because of the salt.

00:08:12.855 --> 00:08:14.339
We don't want to eat a lot of extra salt.

00:08:14.339 --> 00:08:18.269
We don't add salt to our things, so but just for a little road trip snack we are.

00:08:18.269 --> 00:08:23.019
We're always hydrating, drinking a lot of water, and we eat very little salt.

00:08:23.019 --> 00:08:27.495
So on the trips we sometimes like to get the roasted, salted nuts, and that's just so yummy.

00:08:28.196 --> 00:08:30.980
Then the fourth one is Octo Nuts.

00:08:30.980 --> 00:08:35.735
It's O-C-T-O-N-U-T-S brand and it says Octo Nuts California.

00:08:35.735 --> 00:08:41.485
They may have a lot of other different varieties as well, but this is the dry roasted almonds with sea salt.

00:08:41.485 --> 00:08:49.232
I do personally wish they had a little bit less salt in them, but I still eat one or two, maybe with some of the other nuts, like in a trail mix or something.

00:08:49.232 --> 00:08:52.580
These are very, very tasty, and let's turn it over.

00:08:52.580 --> 00:08:55.714
Ingredients almonds and sea salt.

00:08:55.714 --> 00:09:00.504
That's it, nothing else, and I saved my personal favorite for last.

00:09:00.504 --> 00:09:02.014
What do you think about these?

00:09:02.014 --> 00:09:03.980
I'm going to get Jared's opinion about these first.

00:09:04.470 --> 00:09:05.874
I haven't had those yet.

00:09:06.134 --> 00:09:06.875
Are you kidding me?

00:09:07.216 --> 00:09:07.899
No, I have not.

00:09:07.918 --> 00:09:12.153
I'm going to rip the bag open right now You're going to get to hear Jared try these on the air.

00:09:12.173 --> 00:09:14.054
You told me about them, but I hadn't tried those yet.

00:09:14.495 --> 00:09:16.298
Oh, y'all will not believe these things.

00:09:16.298 --> 00:09:16.839
I could not.

00:09:16.839 --> 00:09:27.958
The first time I tried them I thought I'm not sure, and the more I chewed them I don't want to say addictive, because I don't feel like any whole foods are addictive but these are like candy, they are so good.

00:09:27.958 --> 00:09:31.614
They're called organic sun-dried white mulberries.

00:09:31.614 --> 00:09:40.558
Now if you've tried mulberries before, I've had them before where they're dried but they're similar to raisins, so they're soft, kind of like if you would think about an apricot.

00:09:40.558 --> 00:09:42.523
I didn't really care for those as much.

00:09:42.523 --> 00:09:45.455
But these are sun-dried white mulberries.

00:09:45.455 --> 00:09:46.937
Again, they're organic.

00:09:46.937 --> 00:09:51.350
They're by Emirelli E-M-I-R-E-L-L-I of San Francisco.

00:09:51.991 --> 00:09:53.714
These things are amazing.

00:09:53.714 --> 00:09:55.456
It's like they brickle in your mouth.

00:09:55.456 --> 00:10:03.605
They look like a little berry, like a little wild blackberry if you've ever had wild blackberries and when you chew them they kind of fall apart and they're dry.

00:10:03.605 --> 00:10:08.179
But then the more you chew them, the chewier they get and they're sweet.

00:10:08.179 --> 00:10:10.230
I mean just sweet like candy and sugar.

00:10:10.230 --> 00:10:12.152
Get a couple, Don't just eat one.

00:10:12.152 --> 00:10:13.851
Eat a couple together, like three or four.

00:10:13.851 --> 00:10:15.413
Jared's going to try them on the air for you.

00:10:15.894 --> 00:10:22.476
He's going to give you the real deal and let you know, but try several together because some of them aren't as sweet as the others.

00:10:22.476 --> 00:10:25.499
And you chew them at first and you think, yeah, there's not a whole lot of flavor.

00:10:25.499 --> 00:10:28.860
You keep chewing them and they get so sweet.

00:10:28.860 --> 00:10:30.581
They're just absolutely incredible.

00:10:30.600 --> 00:10:32.042
It almost initially chews kind of like granola.

00:10:32.042 --> 00:10:34.643
It's a little bit crunchy and I love that A little bit crunchy.

00:10:34.844 --> 00:10:36.364
It's a little bit crunchy and I love that.

00:10:36.384 --> 00:10:37.105
A little bit crunchy.

00:10:37.105 --> 00:10:42.067
It's not initially sweet, but as you chew it more and more that sweetness develops.

00:10:42.488 --> 00:10:43.628
It's not overly sweet.

00:10:43.927 --> 00:10:51.057
I mean it's nice, because it's not sickeningly sweet, but it's got a great flavor to it.

00:10:51.057 --> 00:10:52.043
Madeline and I flipped out when we found these.

00:10:52.043 --> 00:10:56.855
When we first found them, we started stacking up because sometimes what I'll do and here's another tip for you is we will open the bag.

00:10:56.855 --> 00:11:05.317
If they have more than one bag of a snack and we know the ingredients are good, open the bag and try a little bit in the store and if you like it, then you're not in your car on your way home going.

00:11:05.317 --> 00:11:07.331
I wish I had bought more bags of those.

00:11:07.331 --> 00:11:18.000
You can get them while you're there, because the thing about these stores is they don't always stock the same thing like a grocery store, so you might not find that again, at least for a while, or ever for that matter.

00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:19.864
So stock up if you find something.

00:11:19.884 --> 00:11:27.096
You love Check these stores on a regular basis, maybe once a month, because what they have now they may not have a month from now.

00:11:27.096 --> 00:11:28.375
They may have something different.

00:11:28.375 --> 00:11:33.350
And if this month they don't have something that suits your fancy, try it in a few weeks.

00:11:33.350 --> 00:11:35.693
Go back and take a look, because they may have something different.

00:11:35.693 --> 00:11:41.269
And, like you say, if you like it and they've got five bags of it, go ahead and take them, because they may not get any more.

00:11:41.544 --> 00:11:41.765
Okay.

00:11:41.765 --> 00:11:46.130
So these chew like granola, but then when you keep chewing them they get like a gummy candy.

00:11:46.130 --> 00:11:53.333
It's not like gummy bears, where it's gelatinous, it's more like Starburst or something like that.

00:11:53.333 --> 00:11:54.596
Chew it in your teeth.

00:11:54.596 --> 00:12:03.590
I mean, it's bizarre how different they are.

00:12:03.590 --> 00:12:04.813
There's nothing like them that I have ever tried.

00:12:04.813 --> 00:12:07.485
I love these organic sun dried white mulberries, and let's turn that puppy over while Jared's trying them for a second time.

00:12:07.664 --> 00:12:09.793
It takes a moment for that sweetness to develop.

00:12:09.793 --> 00:12:13.144
So good, but they're not overly sweet, that's.

00:12:13.144 --> 00:12:14.067
What really hits me.

00:12:14.067 --> 00:12:17.517
Is that they're not sickeningly sweet, they're just good.

00:12:18.166 --> 00:12:19.106
Oh, they're amazing.

00:12:19.106 --> 00:12:25.115
Ingredients 100 organic dried white mulberries.

00:12:25.115 --> 00:12:27.879
This is worth the try.

00:12:27.879 --> 00:12:34.344
If you can't find them in a store around you, look for these online, because they are worth the try.

00:12:34.344 --> 00:12:36.673
Very different and you know.

00:12:36.673 --> 00:12:42.751
When you get something different and it's a whole plant food, you're just getting more nutrients, more vitamins, more things.

00:12:42.812 --> 00:12:43.594
More variety.

00:12:43.794 --> 00:12:44.876
More variety.

00:12:44.876 --> 00:12:45.498
That's it.

00:12:45.498 --> 00:12:46.890
You hit the nail on the head right there.
